Rating: 3 out of 5 stars - 30 years is long enough!
I have to admit that the very first time I saw this film, I had to wonder just what in the world was going on here. Nothing made sense. I had learned ,after the fact, that this movie had gone through a dreadful state of editing in which key scenes were edited out so they could keep the film to 90 minutes instead of the intended two hours. I was also told that if I could get hold of a script from this movie I'd be pleasantly surprised. Well, I did and I was!! Night of Dark Shadows reads as a wonderful ghost story. Unfortunately, the film leaves alot to be desired. Recently, we, fans of DS, found out that the missing scenes, that we thought were gone forever, had been rediscovered and that plans for a restoration project, of this film, was about to begin. I as well as thousands of other DS fans are looking forward for this project to commence, though it does seem to be caught up in some "red tape" at the moment. Please! 30 years has been long enough for us to wait for "just another night of terror" as it was meant to be seen!!

Rating: 4 out of 5 stars - Not as good as House of Dark Shadows, but still creepy!
In this, the second of two Dark Shadows movies spawned from the cult classic immortal TV series, storylines and character traits from the show are forgotten and a completely original story unravels. Whereas the original, House of Dark Shadows, capitalized on the popularity of the character of Barnabas Collins, this movie showcases the characters of Quentin Collins and Angelique. Unlike the original, this movie is NOT a vampire story, but rather a ghost story of mystery and intrigue. The result is an eery haunting tale of betrayal, murder, reincarnation, and ghostly possession.

Note to all fans of Barnabas or vampires in general, Jonathan Frid is NO WHERE to be seen here, as he declined to appear in any more Dark Shadows movies due to his being typecast. However, David Selby is back from the show as Quentin and gives a great performance. The beautiful ladies Kate Jackson (Tracy Collins) and Lara Parker (Angelique) are also great here. John Karlen and Nancy Barrett, fan favorites from the show, make appearances as well. Its a great ensemble cast that Dark Shadows fans will love.

It is important to bear in mind though, that Dan Curtis was forced at the last minute by the studio to edit the film from over 2 hours to 90 minutes in just 24 hours' time. Thus the rough cut film may be confusing, as several key scenes were forced out of the movie. However, the film is currently being restored to its original director's cut and will be coming to DVD in a few years. Till then, enjoy the film as it is. Dark Shadows lives on!

Rating: 3 out of 5 stars - Not one of Dan's best, but a must if you collect gothics.
I think one might appreciate this movie a lot more if they've seen the entire original Dark Shadows series since there are clear references to it that might go unappreciated. Kate Jackson was in my opinion the most beautiful 20 something of that or who I've ever seen. She seemed to have a gentle spirit and kind eyes unlike the tiresome hardened/jaded pseudo sophisticated 20 somethings of the present TV actress generation. It was nice to see John Karlen and Grayson Hall again, but overall I found the movie disappointing somehow. Perhaps it is because so much of the movie was edited out. I hear the uncut version may be available soon though. I really wanted a different ending for this one, but like so many Dan Curtis/Richard Matheson movies evil often gets the upper hand perhaps as some sort of cautionary tale against ever buying or inheriting a haunted house or like real life such endings are not always what we expect or hope them to be.
