Rating: 4 out of 5 stars - The real "skinny" on this flick
If you liked "Scream" you're probably going to love this
death spectacle as well. This is a pretty well-done teenage movie that
confronts fate in a unique, if somewhat unbelievable manner. The main
character, Alex, has images of his plane blowing up before departure
to France with his high school class. When he causes a scene on the plane, he, as
well as several classmates, are also removed for various
reasons. Imagine everyone's surprise when the plane actually does blow
up just after takeoff.

The premise is really just an excuse to kill
off the survivors one by one, justified by the weak philosophical idea
that you cannot truly escape death when it is out to get you. This
gives a really great excuse to watch people die in really incredible
and dramatic ways.

For the DVD, there's also a good feature that
allows you to watch some of the audience testing that took place for
the movie. You get to see what changes they made and understand
how the movie was tailored to better suit its audience. I really enjoyed
that as it was something I had not seen done before.

Rating: 5 out of 5 stars - I Walked out Twitching!
What can I say? Final Destination is one of the creepiest films that I have ever sat and watched. Almost ALL the way through it, I was white knuckled, and the opening scene was presented with graphic, stark realism. As I left the theatre, I couldn't help but look at my hand. It was twitching. I guess the reason that I liked this movie the most was that the killer wasn't some ghost-mask wearing pansy that chopped people in a Michael-esque type of role. It was death itself. That alone should chill you a little. If you haven't seen it, the basic plot outline is simple: Alex Browning (Sawa) is going on a trip to France with his French class. He has a dream about himself and his classmates boarding the plane, and he sees all of this weird stuff happening, and eventually in the dream, something goes wrong in th plane, and it explodes. Alex wakes up in a cold sweat, and realizes that he has to go that morning to France. As his dream becomes more real as he is going through the terminal, Alex finally freaks out on the plane. He immediately gets ejected from the plane, and 6 others and two teachers follow. The plane takes off, and Alex tells the people that his fears were because of his dream, and that the plane will explode in mid-air. Well, soon enough, it happens, and everyone leaves Alex alone in silent shock. Alex realizes that there is a "design" to life, and that by getting off the plane, the students have cheated death, and lived. But they now need to figure out when, and how, it will be coming back at them! This movie is perfect for every horror fanatic, from the SCREAMers to GREMLINS. Prepare yourself for an experience unlike any other...you won't be sorry!

Rating: 4 out of 5 stars - Better than you might think
Before I watched Final Destination, I dismissed it as just another teen horror flick not worth watching, but when I finally got a chance to see it, I was surprised by how refreshing the film was to the horror genre. The plot (which may seem a bit ludicrous, just a bit...) is that Alex (Devon Sawa) has a premonition that the plane he and his class are boarding to France is going to explode. After getting kicked off the plane with some other students (including Ali Larter and Sean William Scott), the plane does explode, but as we soon find out, Death hasn't forgotten about Alex and the others. One by one the survivors are picked off by an unseen force that causes elaborate causes of death, some of which are eerie, and some others just plain ridiculous. Veteran X-Files director James Wong carries the film at a nice pace and has a surprising sense of urgency and dread as we watch what happens to the survivors, and Sawa is surprisingly good in his role as the man looking for a way to find a pattern to cheat death. The ending however is obviously just a quick thought of glued on afterthought to pave way for an inevitable sequel (which is due out soon) and hurts Final Destination's overall score; however the alternate ending included on the DVD I find a much, much better ending and it has a bit of emotional impact that would have really set Final Destination above and beyond the countless heap of unoriginal teen horror films of today. With numerous nods to other films of the genre, Final Destination is a fun thrill ride that is much better than I expected it to be.
