Average Rating: Rating: - Another GREAT Western Vehicle For Selleck... While there never will be another John "Duke" Wayne, Tom Selleck - or Sam Elliot - is the heir apparent as the quintessential "cowboy" in a genre, which, unfortunately, no longer enjoys the appeal it once did. Both of these actors are thoroughly believable in their western roles. In Last Stand at Sabre River, Selleck plays a disillusioned civil war veteran in this wonderful Elmore Leonard story. While I've seen Selleck shine in a couple of wonderful made-for-tv movies based on Louis L'Amour's great yarns (Shadow Riders and The Sacketts) as well as the thoroughly entertaining Quigley Down Under, he's every bit as good in this great film as well. I agree with the previous reviewer. This is very much in the mold of the classic old westerns - Shane, the old Jimmy Stewart/Anthony Mann films - which relied more on great story telling, character development and panoramic scenery than endless gunfights and bloodshed. As far as I'm concerned, you could take any great western story and cast Tom Selleck in the lead role and chances are that it would be a great and thoroughly watchable event. Rating: - Excellent Western Tom Selleck does an excellent job as a disillusioned civil war veteran determined to bring his family back together on their own land after he is wounded in the war. This is a western as westerns were meant to be made, not the Young Guns type of violence laden shootfest. If you are Western fan that enjoyed Alan Ladd, Jimmy Stewart, Glenn Ford, Gary Cooper or John Wayne, this is a Western you will enjoy.
