Rating: 5 out of 5 stars - It just plain don't get any sweeter than this
This game is lot better then Madden 2002 for PS2. The graphics ain't a lot different. But the sound affects and talking are improved. Al Michaels is better than Pat Summerall. After a while they start saying all the same stuff though. Playing the game is more fun now sense you can control your players better and the players have more moves and poses when they catch the ball and tackle the guy with the ball and fall down like real life. To many injuries happen though but they can be turned off if you dont want to get hurt. Franchize mode is funnest for me cause you can make up your own team and play for 30 seasons. There is a new rookie draft thing but I don't like it much sense it takes too long to look at everybody. Your best bet is to just traid away all your draft picks at hte beginning of the year. If you really want to fool another player hit R2 to flip your play at the line of scrimmige and the defense will be backwards for what your doing. I like the music in theh game also but it gets repetive after a few days. BON JOVI! The Madden cards are cool but I would have like to see other players from last years game like Mark Gasteneau or somebody else. Joe Montana is the king, but not in this game. One thing bad is that the people at EA got some stuff wrong. They have the Rams as a real good team, but in real life they don't do good. Overall this game is fun and you'll like it..BooYahhh!!!!

Rating: 4 out of 5 stars - The usual high quality, but could be better
What's not to like about Madden? Well I feel that there are still flaws in the gameplay that have been around for the last 2 years that haven't been fixed.
1) Fieldgoals and punts by computer. The computer is money all the time. 58 field goal in a blizzard with a 15 mph cross wind? No problem. The football doesn't just creep over the bar either , it clears by 20 yards! I swear the computer could hit a 70 yarder. This is unrealistic.
2) Blocking punts or field goals. This is impossible. I have never seen this on PS2 and I play alot! Given that this is quite a regular occurence in the real game and was possible on Sega genesis version of Madden in the early 1990s this is rather strange.
3) Hard too run between tackles. Good yardage in this area is still tough going. I can't remember the last time I ran over a linebacker and busted a big gain down the middle. You always seem to get gummed up behing your offensive line.
4) Have you ever seen a defensive lineman engage his opposite number and then immediatly fall backwards on the ground with his legs and arms in the air like a dead ant? This happens frequently, especially on pass protection. Often 3/4 of my defensive line are on the ground a second or 2 after the snap!! You would think they were 150 weaklings.
5)Wide receivers still not able to get good separation from dbs. Often u will connect on a long pass as your man gets behind db, only to be tackled after a step or 2. There is not enough YAC.
If they could fix these problems I would have given it 5 stars. However the game has been improved in many areas , and overall is more realisitic. Still worth it.

Rating: 3 out of 5 stars - Dear EAS - please see NCAA 2002 and/or 2003
I'm extremely dissapointed in this year's efforts. I've played Madden for the past 6-7 years and this seems like a total step backwards from last year's improvements. Where's the defense? I've had to go to either the dime or quarter just to be able to stop mediocre offenses who all of sudden end up with gunslingers at QB. The running has been botched up as well. Also, the graphics are not as sharp as on NCAA. NCAA - if you haven't noticed by the more recent reviews is much more enticing and realistic and enjoyable than Madden. The gameplay in NCAA is top-notch - I never feel like the computer is cheating. The background and overall environments in NCAA are great. Seeing the twilight sky turn dark as your game progresses adds a lot to the game. I've yet to see Madden incorporate this into their game. How about taking out training camp and adding more bells and whistles to things like the playoffs and the Superbowl. Make reaching the Superbowl a special event (If it's in the game then it's in the game). Right? Get the commentary fixed as well - Michaels' recordings are very "cut and paste" - again, I never hear anything like that in NCAA. How come you're not coordinating efforts with the group who develops NCAA - it seems that there would be some synergistic value to that. I'm going over to NFL 2K4 next year if things don't improve. If it ain't broke don't try and fix it. But when you fix something, make sure you test it so that you don't break what was already okay.
