Average Rating:
Rating: - Pokemon Master in Training!
I'm a first time GameBoy owner and I found this game to be pretty impressive given the limitations of the GameBoys power. I have Pokemon Stadium for N64 which is outstanding and found that without Pokemon raised in the Red, Blue or Yellow games that you can only get so far. I resisted buying a GameBoy just to play the N64 game better but now I'm glad I did. I haven't played Pokemon Red or Blue but Yellow is simply a better version of both from what I've read. The graphics (especially the battles) are very good given the before mentioned limitations. I would say it is original Nintendo 8-bit Game system quality. The sound is as good as possible given the tiny speaker and fits right in with the N64 game and the cartoon series. The gameplay itself is very absorbing and easy to pickup. I'm a novice but I can see where I'll be playing this game for quite awhile accumulating Pokemon I can export into my N64 game. The only criticism I have is the fact that you almost have to have both game systems to enjoy the Pokemon games, although they are very fun as stand alone products. You also have to have the Red, Blue and Yellow games to collect all the Pokemon as there is a handful missing from each game. For example, there are 12 of 150 missing from each version. I recommend this game highly however. Now go "catch 'em all!"
Rating: - Depends who you are
To like Pokemon yellow, you really have to be a certain kind of person. Firstly, you have to like Pikachu. If you dislike him in any way, tough luck for you, because he's your starting Pokemon whether you like it or not. Secondly, you also had to really, really like Red & Blue, because it's basically the same game except for certain changes (like the levels Pokemon learn moves at.) Also, the whole game is slighty easier after you defeat the first gym leader. The main problem in this game is that Pikachu has had a chance to be in your game in Red & Blue. What I mean is, in Viridian Forest, you can catch one at a very low level (I forget exactly, but I know it's under 10.) If you happened to raise that on your Red/Blue game, this is kind of a repeat. You want something new. But, if you are new to the Gameboy line of Pokemon games, and are a Pikachu fan, this version was specially designed for you.
Rating: - Good, but not perfect.
Pokemon Yellow is basically the same game as Red and Blue. Starting with Pikachu makes the game more difficult, especially at the start. Considering that Pikachu is not a very strong Pokemon, and that you can catch him early on in the older games (look in Viridian Forest), I don't think this is a very useful feature. It could appeal to younger kids who like Pikachu from the cartoons, I suppose. You can catch all three of the starting Pokemon from Red and Blue in this game, but there are better pokemon out there. If you are going for all 150, I guess this would be the game to get, though. Once you defeat the first gym leader, the game is actually slightly easier than Red and Blue. In conclusion, I really don't think Yellow is worth it for experienced Pokemon fans. If you are just starting out, however, you might want to consider it.
