Rating: 4 out of 5 stars - Good game, but some major flaws
The first three months or so I played StarCraft, I loved it. It seemed that nothing was wrong with this surprisingly bug free game. However, the more you play it, the more you will realise its huge flaws.

Basically, it is an RTS, which means you start from scratch and build an empire. There are three races to choose from: the Terrans, whose strength is in special abilities like the nukes or Yamato guns but otherwise balanced between firepower and cost; the Zerg, whose advantage lies in its cheap units and their ability to build up a quick force; and the Protoss, whose units are far more advanced and expensive. The best race depends only on your playing style.

Things go wrong however, when you realise that whoever can build up a force of their best unit wins every game. It is not a world-class general that wins, it is number of units. Too bad for me I am a slow builder and lose every game I play.

Bottom line, the game's lightning fast pace may not be suitable for some gamers, in which case they should turn to the Age of Empires series.

Rating: 5 out of 5 stars - Great RTS game
This game is sort of a spinoff of Age of Empires, but has expanded on it. Actually, AOE2 has many of the capabilities that AOE didn't, but StarCraft developed. It has 3 races, but also the tech trees are different, and you need different buildings, etc...

There are 30 missions, with a great plot through them. After you finish them, you can create your own with the campaign editor. It is very extensive, letting you add sounds, briefings, and triggered events. That all allows you to create very realistic scenarios, rather than just plopping units on a map.

If you think that sounds like fun, wait until you get online at Battle.Net. You can play against up to 7 other people or computers, in many forms of combat, such as allied or free-for-all. Even if you play the same map over and over, it never grows boring if you play with other people. Also, you can share the maps you make with others when you host games, and the other players download it to play the game.

This game is definetly worth playing, and it is one of the best RTS games on the market.

Rating: 5 out of 5 stars - best game ever--period
I've been a semi-serious computer gamer for over ten years now. I was addicted to the original Simcity, then, a few years later, Duke Nukem 3D, and then WarCraft II, which showed me just how much fun a computer game can be. I've played dozens of others (Half-Life, Civ II, Alpha Centauri, Heroes of M & M II and III, Diablo, and on and on), but none of them are quite as refined as StarCraft. I am convinced that it is the best computer game of all time, but I admit that I've taken a special liking to strategy games. StarCraft can be fairly difficult--if you don't hurry and get ready before the enemy arrives you will get your butt kicked good--but it's not so difficult that you can't win. (The same thing cannot be said for all the campaigns in the excellent add-on, Brood War.)

In a nutshell, StarCraft has a tremendous interface (beginners can just sit right down and start playing), a much better than average storyline, rich characterization, beautiful graphics, an intelligent AI, and loads of the loving detail that Blizzard is becoming well known for. If WarCraft III can top this, I might quit my job, give up sleep, and give my life fully over to the Blizzard co.
