Rating: 4 out of 5 stars - Good game!
I bought this for my daughter for Christmas but only after we had rented it to see if it was worth buying. It is a good game in its own right, though I have to agree with the other reviewers that Insomniac did a much better job. But I still like the Spyro series. It is challenging, neither my daughter nor myself have gotten bored or frustrated with the game. The different breathes that Spyro has is pretty cool. I've seen some of the other reviews say that their graphics have frozen, they had problems with the sounds and that Sparks is not with Spyro and then suddenly he will appear. I'm a little confused by that as my daughter and I have not experience any of these problems with this game either on the rentals or the one that I just purchased last month. We have had very good luck with this game and ours of enjoyment. It is very challenging in my opinion. About my only real and main complaint is the price of the game - everyone has it so outrageously priced. Other than that it is a good game.

Rating: 3 out of 5 stars - It ain't no Insomniac Game
I REALLY was nervous about buying this game. I had heard the graphics froze, that it was too fast, and that you couoln't go back after finishing the game. My mom told me to rent it first, but the games were always checked out. I couldn't resist.
In some ways, the game was a lot better than my expectations. The graphics, while cheesy and poor compared to past Spyros, were alright in their own way, and never froze up. But in other ways, this was much worse than I thought.
First of all, this is the frist PlayStation Spyro NOT made by Insomniac Games. Those people at Insomniac were really dedicated people. They never made a sequel rushed or buggy to get it out fast to make money off it by selling it on their previous games. All of their games were bug-free (almost; no serious bugs are on any Spyro games now), detailed, realistic, and fun to play. Equinox Entertainment, the creators of this game, need lessons from Insomniac. They might have tried hard, but this game appears to habve been rushed to sell off of Spyros 1, 2, and 3. Many of the dragfonfly callenges are too hard. You can't find the targets. Moneybags, Bianca, and Hunter only appear once (so far in my game). After catching a dragonfly, Sparx often gets stuck in one place and won't follow you or eat. You can run right through him. The character designs and graphic look are far too altered and terrible compared to past Spyros.
However, this game does have it's strong points. The different breaths, especially electric, are nice. Spyro gets lines in places other than the movies. And while different, Spyro 4's worlds look beautiful in their own way. Sparx's bug can be fixed by pausing the game.
All in all, this is a large disappointment. Only buy it if you are an absolute Spyro fanatic.
I'll give the game a 5/10

Rating: 3 out of 5 stars - Depends on how you look at it....
I have all the original ps Spyro games, and so of course I bought this one... and yes it's different and not as good engaging as the others. The graphics are nice, it's the first game I've played on ps2 though, and the load times are pretty LONG. And yes it's incredibly short. And it's just not as good as the others, really. But if that were it, I'd still give it 4 or 4.5 stars, because I think those differences are just because Insomniac didn't make this one. However, this game is BUGGY, and very much so. The Speedways don't work- you can't win, every time I play them, I pass the other racers but my rank doesn't change. Control of spyro is pretty weak, too... and it freezes, but it helps to set your ps2 speed to fast instead of standard. The sound gets stuck, playing over and over, scenery disappears, and a few times I've gotten stuck in walls and such, that certainly SHOULDN'T have happened... and there are VARIOUS other things like that, and I'm only half way through it. If you're really a Spyro fan, I'd wait. Spyro 3 had a serious bug, and they eventually released a fixed version. Hopefully they'll do the same for this one. Until then, it's only really nice for true spyro fans, and even then it's frustrating and disappointing.
