Rating: - Great game set in my favorite post nuclear war universe!
Set in the Fallout universe taking place between Fallout 1 and 2, you play the role of a Brotherhood of Steel Warrior. The BoS was that secretive order which helped fight the evil in the 2 Fallout2.Using more or less the same combat system as in the 2 Fallouts, the game takes you mission by mission in eliminating the enemies of the brotherhood. Everything is more or less the same as Fallout combatwise. Even the weapons. This time however you get vehicles. From scouters to Hummers to even tanks! Storywise, it's not bad but I didn't like the fact that the Brotherhood was portrayed as a kind of gang fighting for power in the wasteland. The game is relatively stable as I only suffered one crash in about the 20 hours of play. Good game.
Rating: - Fun but unambitious
This is a fun game but it is pretty unambitious. The combat system is basically the same as in the original RPGs, and the fact that it works so well is a testament to those games. The most important thing that was added was the ability to duck and crawl which I think is the game's best feature, but is fairly standard in games of this type. The other big plus to the game is the Fallout universe. The post-apocalyptic world is in many ways like the Wild West with better guns. The different factions like the BOS and the Master's Army, are interesting and bring their own story to the game. There's really no doubt that there was room in the Fallout universe for a strategy game. But the designers were pretty lazy on content. The story is just an excuse to change the BOS around and get them out of California. It's not terrible if you don't take it too seriously but Fallout fans will have come to expect more than that. Everyone's dialogue is pretty lame too. But the real negative is the maps. They are pretty poorly put together in that most are purely linear. They "funnel" you so you have to face everybody in order. So basically -- there's not a whole lot of tactics involved. There's really no excuse for this at all but poor design. Overall, it's a decent game, but not a must have by any means. Good if you have some money and a few late nights to waste.
Rating: - A Refreshing Departure From the Classic Fallout
Fallout I was the first RPG that I feel in love with. When Interplay released its third installment in this successful series (Actually the second story in the Fallout universe, supposedly taking place between volumes I & II), I had to have it. A refreshing departure from the typical Fallout scheme, Tactics is a comletely squad based game. Being a fan of both Fallout and such games as Rogue Spear, this was the perfect hybrid for me. I found this game to also be a little more difficult than the previus Fallout games, as you are responsible for the actions and safety of up to six other characters simultaneously. Fan sof both Fallout and tactical games should find this game highly entertaining to say the least. This game also far surpasses the previus Fallout games in its rich graphics and its stunning gameplay features. Five big stars. Highly recommended.
