Rating: - "WE HAVE A WINNER"!
I'm sure you've read all the maligned reviews against Donkey Kong 64; now, here's a worthwhile opinion. First of all, this is probably the hardest and most frustrating platform game I have ever enjoyed. Several of the mini games had me shouting obscenities throughout the entire gameplay. There are gamers who complain about the repetetiveness of DK64--I don't think so. Yes, some of the mini games and bosses do repeat themselves, but they get more difficult as the game progresses. For instance, some mini games may add more challenge by limiting the amount of time you have to complete the given task and increasing the amount of enemies per level. Don't be fooled by people who swear this game is sooo easy. If you like fun and challenging platform games, then Donkey Kong 64 is the perfect choice. Remember, this is by no means a Mario 64 clone. DK64 is definitely one of the best games on the N64 system. My only reason for giving it 4 stars is the often troublesome camera angles.....arrrgh. Anyway, I see no earthly justification for not adding this to your collection of greats. HAVE LOADS OF FUN!
Rating: - D.K. is back!
This was my first N64 game ever. I love the intro rap song it cracks my up whenever I listen to it. D.K. is pretty strong but when you meet Chunky you won't think so anymore. The game srarts out with five birds flying towards D.K. island boy that place looks fun. Then you see King K.rool's moving island coming straight for D.K. island. Then it shows those crazy Kremlings trying to control the moving island but they are not having much luck. Needless to say K.rool yells for his captins telling them to steal D.K.'s Golden Bannanas plus they have already kiddnapped Diddy, Tiny, Lankey, and Chunky. Well let's get to the quest. You have to get the Spells and Potions from Cranky, the Guns and Ammobelts from Funky and the Musical instruments from Candy. This is a Pretty long game not one like Spiderman 64 which you can beat in about an hour and a half. My favorite kong is Diddy he is so good he stars in his own game Diddy Kong Racing 64 which I love. I haven't seen or heard anything about a D.K. game for Gamecube yet but I'm sure they will make one someday. This Game resembles Mario 64, Banjo Kazooie, Banjo Tooie, and Gex enter the Gecko. This game is funny and jammed full of action/adventure. This is one my favorites. I have only beat it once but I still play multiplayer with my sisters. I recently started a new file but I haven't beat it. The two top levels are Fungi Forest and Crystal Caves. This game is rated E for everyone and some people say it's for younger gamers but my Dad plays it so give it try. PLEASE?
Rating: - Rare does it again...
Where to begin? DK64 is flawless. From the addictive gameplay to the beautiful graphics, Rare got everything right. The story is simple(naturally; there's only so much you can do when the characters are apes). You begin with Donkey Kong alone. It seems King K. Rool is determined to destroy your island. He's kidnapped the other four Kongs(Diddy, Lanky, Tiny, and Chunky) and has placed them in a series of cages throughout your isle and within his ship. You'll free them one by one as you go through the first half of the game and use their combined talents to complete the last half. Along the way you'll need to find as many bananas, golden bananas, blueprints, and fairies as you can.The DK Isles serve as a central hub, allowing you access to eight individual areas. They are, in order: Jungle Japes; Angry Aztek; Frantic Factory; Gloomy Galleon; Fungi Forest; Crystal Caves; Creepy Castle; Hideout Helm. Before each level you'll have to visit K. Lumsy, a huge Kremling imprisoned by K. Rool. You see, each level contains a key that will unlock part of K. Lumsy's cage, and every time you deliver a key he'll open the entrance to the next level(note: it's possible to enter Gloomy Galleon before beating Frantic Factory). Each level(including DK Isles) contains five golden bananas, a blueprint, and a banana medal(earned by collecting 85 out of 100 regular bananas) per character(the DK Isles have no regular bananas; Hideout Helm has nothing). That's 200 golden bananas, 40 blueprints, and 40 banana medals. There are also 20 fairies(required to get the 201st golden banana) and 10 crowns. Oh, yeah. There's also a pair of coins that you have to beat the original Donkey Kong arcade game and Rare's first game, Jetpac, to earn. Would it be redundant to say that this game is huge? As I said earlier, the graphics are incredible. Not only is DK's Island huge in terms of sheer area, the individual levels are very detailed. The apes and Kremlings aren't bad, either, but when you're fighting any of the bosses you'll understand why that Expansion Pak is required. The best scene, however, is the ship coming into port after you activate the lighthouse in Gloomy Galleon(the dynamic lighting here is unbelievable). Needless to say, if you like adventure games, DK64 is tough to beat. The gameplay is fun, but never overly difficult and the graphics alone are worth the price of admission. Try beating this with 101%(you'll understand when you see the game selection screen), on your own(no walkthroughs!), and see if you can do it in under 40 hours(my time was somewhere between 47-48 hours). Enjoy!
