Rating: - Devilishly delicious
What a pleasure to play a game that is stable, fast (even on my relatively slow computer), well-balanced, and just plain fun. The graphics appear a bit dated at first, but become more detailed and beautiful in each area. In so many role-playing games, exploration becomes a chore because everything looks and feels the same. Not so in Diablo II, which becomes more interesting and varied as the game progresses.Although Diablo II is still more an action game than an RPG, the new skill system and the increasingly clever quests make the game feel almost as rich as a full-bodied RPG. Because each character type has different skills and approaches to combat, and there are five character types, the game is very replayable. Combat is fast and easy to control. Left and right mouse clicks can be configured to perform any combat action or cast any spell. And even when the screen is crammed with nasty beasties, combat response is smooth and fast (I have a PII 400). At first I didn't like the fact that I can't save and reload games when I want to, but this does make game play more intense and realistic. It makes sense that death should have some consequences, and at least you can retrieve your items. Diablo II is a great game. I usually stick to RPG and strategy games, but this action/RPG ranks among the best games I've played. Thanks to Blizzard for taking the times to do things right.
Rating: - Great game- Even the fifth time through
Diablo 2, is a game like few others. All though it is not a 3d game in a world of 3d, it is a game that ranks along with the greats of gaming: Doom, Half-Life, and Starcraft to name a few. Diablo 2 is essentially a click-attack game, but as you progress you realize their is strategy to the click-attack, and you gain amazing attacks as you progress in level. The game features five distinct classes, with their own style of play and three difficulty levels. The difficulty levels surpass most games, in that instead of just making more or tougher enemies, you also gain access to a new arsenal of amazing items. The story is engaging, and the quests are fun. There were not too many times where I was hoping to finish a quest from boredom. I have now beaten the game 5 times on three different characters, and still work at improving my current one. It is a great game overall, with the biggest cons being that the NPC mercenaries becoming useless in later difficulty levels, the hassels of picking up your corpse after you die, and of course the many hours of your life this game will absorb.
Rating: - Worth the wait, but system and memory hog
For those of us who enjoy fantasy role-playing adventure games, this is an excellent choice. Featuring astounding graphics, fantastic cinematics, and exciting play, I feel this title was worth the 2 year wait. The game is much more exciting and scary than the first one, and the addition of ambient sound effects really give it a feeling of atmosphere. The 5 character classes in this game are much more distinct than Diablo 1, with differing skills that can only be gained if you are that class. The game is much longer and the terrain and monsters are varied enough to keep it interesting. Cons: Huge memory hog. The full install with all of it's multi-player capabilities requires nearly a gig of space! Even the bare minimum install is about 650 megs. Also, the game is a little buggy, and sometimes crashes or stalls, even on power machines. Go to blizzard.com to download the latest patches (including Direct X 7.0) and watch out for DVD software conflicts.
