Rating: 3 out of 5 stars - Not quite the complete greatest hits you would want
Another greatest hits compilation from Elton John, After Greatest Hits, Volume II, Volume III, The Very Best of (Import),1976-1986, Love Songs and One Night Only (The Greatest Hits)-the horrible live album, here comes Greatest Hits 1970-2002. Granted Sir Elton has had a long career filled with ups and downs with a lot of wonderful songs, so let's hear a few other hits. I'm am a huge Elton John fan, having every commerical release and was excited about this purchase as well. The songs on the disc sound wonderful but there are so many hits lacking which is why I gave it only 3 stars. How about a 3rd disc with many other top 20 songs that he had. Where is Blue Eyes, Healing Hands, Empty Garden, Part Time Love and nobody in the US is going to believe that Written in the Stars with LeAnn Rimes was a bigger hit than Lucy In the Sky with Diamonds which doesn't appear here. I think rabid Elton John fans would have loved more material, especially from the down side of his 70's career and 80's comeback. So the songs weren't up to snuff but wouldn't it great to hear even some guilty pleasures for old times sake like Ego, Bite Your Lip, Victim Of Love (well maybe not),Nobody Wins, Chloe, Kiss The Bride, Who Wears These Shoes, Wrap Her Up, A Word In Spanish, Club At The End of The Street, The Last Song and the extremely wonderful and Adult Contempory #1 Simple Life. Look I mentioned 17 songs in this review, easily another full disc of music. Guess we fans will have to burn our own greatest hits from Elton John to get what we really want especially from later in his career.

Rating: 5 out of 5 stars - A Great Summary To A Great Artist.
If you want the best deal on the greatest solo artist who ever lived, this is it. Everything is here including the two tracks, "Levon" and "Tiny Dancer," that were omitted from the previously released Very Best of Elton John(import) and Greatest Hits Volume 1. They are alone worth purchasing for in this amazing collection. The two lesser known hits that were hardly played on the radio, "Island Girl" and "Little Jeannie," are also great songs included here. I listened to these songs for the very first time on this cd and I was immediately hooked by their amazing melodies. Every song is a classic! I agree with most of the track selection except maybe the epic song "Mona Lisa's and Mad Hatter's" being excluded. That song became so huge after it was played in the movie, 'Almost Famous.' It was also his tribute song to the heroes of New York City. I also disagree with the songs, "Lucy in The Sky With Diamonds" and "Pinball Wizard" being excluded here. They were not original Elton John songs, but they were excellent cover songs that sounded so much better than the originals done by The Beatles and The Who. I think these three songs should have replaced the smaller hits "Believe," "Blessed" and "Something About The Way You Look Tonight." It would also have been nice to include the #1 single of all time "Candle In The Wind 1997" tribute to Princess Diana in this collection. It's a damn shame all of these wonderful classics became left out.

Despite all of its flaws, I still give this greatest hits collection five stars. The album is still amazing. Disc one is much better than disc two with it spanning the greatest period of Elton John's career from 1970-1976. Everything is here ranging from power ballads, "Your Song," "Daniel," and "Goodbye Yellow Brick Road" to hard rockers, "Crocodile Rock, "The Bitch Is Back" and "Saturday Night's Alright For Fighting." Every song represented in the first disc is Elton John during his prime. The first half of disc two is mostly from the 80's and is also good with three exceptional tracks, "Don't Go Breaking My Heart," "I'm Still Standing," and "Nikita." The last half of disc two is from the 90's and is the weakest period of Elton John's career but it ends strongly with two great songs from his last album 'Songs From The West Coast', the songs-"I Want Love" and "This Train Don't Stop There Anymore." Overall, this compilation is very essential to any Elton John fan and a great place to start for beginners. I highly recommend this collection over any other Elton John greatest hits album that came before.

Rating: 5 out of 5 stars - Through The Years
Elton John has released countless greatest hits packages, but if you want a retrospective from his first hit "Your Song" to his most recent, "This Train Don't Stop There No More", then Greatest Hits 1970-2002 is a must own. This collection shows why Elton John and his lyricist Bernie Taupin are master musicians. They created some of the most memorable and classic songs of all time. They are equally adept at writing a beautiful ballad like "Daniel", a bouncy pop tune like "Crocodile Rock" or a hard rocker like "Saturday Night's Alright For Fighting". Every song on disk number one is a bonefide classic. Some of the tracks on disk two, like the Lion King music, doesn't compare to his 70's heyday, but 80's & 90's tracks like "I'm Still Standing", "Little Jeannie", "The One" and "Nikita" have worn well through the years. Michael Jackson is the self proclaimed King of Pop, but the real crown belongs to Elton John.
