Average Rating:
Rating: - Chicks with attitude
I heard "I Can Love You Better" on CMT as I was flipping through the channels one day, attracted by the unique blend of voice and instrument. I liked their next single, "There's Your Trouble", equally as well and decided to buy the CD, really only expecting to listen to (and enjoy) those two songs. Was I wrong! Now I find that I'll skip to "I'll Take Care of You", "Let 'er Rip", and "Am I the Only One" more than anything--but I still enjoy the entire album! Fun, fresh, not your typical country music--a nice change of pace in the genre, even though I'm a big country fan. I took a friend of mine--not a country lover by any means--to see them in concert and now I have HER hooked as well; I have to agree with her when she said, "Hey, this stuff's good! They're chicks with attitude."
Rating: - Excellent!
First off, let me say that I listen to ONLY country music. I don't see why people are saying that this CD is not country enough. It's packed with country songs, and while it does fit in with the crossover music that's popular today, it definitely stays within the country boundaries. I have both of the Dixie Chicks album's, and I prefer Wide Open Spaces over the newer album Fly. I think Wide Open Spaces is one of the best country albums available today. It combines upbeat, fun-loving songs with tender, heart-felt ballads. My personal favorites are Wide Open Spaces, Loving Arms, You Were Mine, Never Say Die, and Am I The Only One (who's ever felt this way). If you're considering purchasing a Dixie Chick's album for the first time, this one is the one you want. While Fly is a good album, it doesn't have the emotion and energy of Wide Open Spces. So purchase this album today, especially if you're a country music fan! You'll be glad you did!
Rating: - This is REAL country
I'm very much a fan of straight-ahead country: George Jones, Merle Haggard, early '80s Emmylou, etc. I appreciate some good newer country artisits who crossover somewhat as well: Patty Loveless, Alan Jackson, Vince Gill, etc. But I stay way away from Faith Hill and Shania. It's just not country. When I first heard of the Dixie Chicks, given hype and platinum blonde image, gave them an immediate pass as more of "today's hot young country." But I was wrong. This is real good country music. Natalie Maines has a real country voice, kind of a blend of Tanya Tucker and Patty Loveless. Song selection on this album is excellent (somewhat better than on "Fly," I think) and the other girls sing and play the fiddle and dobro with authority. But Dixie Chicks also bring a 21st Century "you go girl" strong-women perspective to their music that's positive for young listeners, like my 13-year-old daughter, I think. Lots and lots of positive energy. I wish them a fruitful and creative career.
