Rating: 1 out of 5 stars - Real cute avril.
Forget Rancid, The Ramones, The Misfits, and The Clash. We have
a new punk rock legend, and her name is Avril Lavigne. Anything but the ordinary and ANYTHING but a posuer. Avril enjoys doing PUNK things like dating "Sk8er Bois" and wearing PUNK things like studded bracelets and cute little ties. WHAT A REBEL! I always thought that punk had to do something with fast, loud, hard music but I guess I was wrong. Punk rock isn't a genre of music, it's a FASHION STATEMENT and a fad. Avril's safe, cute, radio-friendly version of rock is so nice and sweet that tomarrow, I'm going to be a nice skull tie, start sk8boarding, and just pretty much be a true punk. Also, I never realized how punk it was to misspell simple words(sk8er boi). I always thought it was a trend in rap, but if it's working with teenieboppers in one genre, why not trick them again, since it's real hip to be illiterate. Oh, how I do enjoy how punk the radio and MTV is nowadays. Excuse me, I'm going to go do some punk things that us punk people do. I'm throwing away all my Rancid and Ramones cds away. I can't believe I ever liked them. I'm going to blindly follow Avril, therefore being myself and a punk. After all, following blindly is the punk thing to do, right?

Rating: 2 out of 5 stars - Punk for preppies
As we get closer and closer to a major Britney backlash, a whole slew of preteen girls get a little older and reject the whole kiddie pop music thing. Those girls don't need to worry. There are new pop idols waiting in the wings. They're smarter! They dress differently! They write their own songs! And they're slightly older! However, the fact is, as the kids reject the Britneys, the Christinas, and the boy bands, the stuff that's being marketed toward them (by basically the same people) is still as saccharine and shallow as the music they were previously listening to. It's basically all the same, only these ladies get some songwriting credit. And they don't even have that much to say.

Avril cracks me up to no end. The closest comparison I can find is a poppier, underage Alanis Morissette with a weird skate punk act whose music videos consist of harassing mall security guards. I could whine endlessly about her poseur qualities and how stupid it is that people call her punk, but the music itself kinda sucks, too, for lack of a better description. It's manufactured pop music that is slightly harder and more biting than what the bubblegum teen divas put out, but that doesn't mean it's any better. Her songwriting is awkward and the melodies are catchy the first few times you hear them, but they become old and unsubstantial, really really fast. Overhyped, overrated, and influential on this generation of teenyboppers - she's Grammy material, alright.

Rating: 5 out of 5 stars - Avril rawks, but you already knew that :)
I don't have "Let Go" yet, but I'm definately saving up for it. After stealing my friend's copy, I quite literally fell in love with the album. Avril Lavigne is a very talented girl with a unique voice, and great songwriting skills.

It's a welcome change that the 17-year-old doesn't promote revealing clothes, or using her body to sell her work *cough* you know who I mean *cough*. She plays her own music, the guitar for those of you who were wondering, and is good at it too. Her style, both playing and vocal is the perfect mix of rock, punk, and pop, with no parental advisory stamp on the cover. I didn't think that was possible.

The many messages her songs send out are also a plus.

"Sk8er Boi" looks at being your own person and taking control of your own life, not letting other people do it for you. So many people, mainly teens and pre-teens, want to fit in and be one of the crowd. This issue of conformity is made easy to understand.
Even though it'll probably be stuck in your head for a day or two, can you think of a better song to play over and over?

--

Her hit first-single,"Complicated", talks about people trying to be someone they aren't, and hurting the people close to them in the process. This pretty goes hand-in-hand with "Sk8er Boi."

Avril's a great role model, and someone I definately look up to. She's an inspiration for everyone who wants to get their feet wet in the music biz, even me. All in all, you won't be disappointed in this album, and I can only hope I get it soon.

I can guarantee we'll be hearing more of Avril in the coming years. Ciao, for now :)
