Rating: 5 out of 5 stars - Worthy album for David Gray fans.
Let me start by saying that if you're a David Gray fan you should buy this album. Also let me say that I wish there was a 4.5 star rating option.

My favorite DG album is White Ladder (perhaps because I only started listening to him at the end of 2000, though I have since bought Century Ends & Flesh). I suppose in A New Day At Midnight I was hoping for a White Ladder II but that's not what this is.

ANDAM has some songs that are classic DG and others that rely a little more on some of the more comtemporary beats one might find on an electric drum machine. That worried me, especially the first time I heard the beginning to Track 2 (Caroline). I thought "Oh no, he's done it. He's gone nutty.", but really it's not that bad, just different.

ANDAM has grown on me slowly. It has taken many listens to really appreciate it, but I've found the music stuck in my head during the day which is why it gets a 4.5 from me and not a 4.

In conclusion to me this album is pretty good. Not great, but pretty good. If it was up to me I'd be listening to White Ladder II, but I suppose artists change and we have to hope that it's not for the worst (like U2 with their Pop album!).

Rating: 5 out of 5 stars - David Gray Outdoes Himself Again
White ladder is one of my favourite albums of the last five years, and I was awaiting this album with as much apprehension as excitement. But I've been stunned to discover that this album is even better than White Ladder. A new day at midnight presents a more cohesive sound without sacrificing itself to excessive polish or over-production. It covers a larger emotional range than White Ladder. Here still are the beautiful sad songs, the introspective pondering songs, and the more upbeat songs like "Babylon" before them. "(Meet me on) the Other Side" is one of the most moving songs about death to be produced in a decade - while Peter Gabriel's recent meditation on the same subject, "I Grieve", is a powerful Baroque effort of eerie and subtle textures and layers of sound, Gray achieves an even more emotive effect as his raspy voice quivers over a ringing piano. It is a truly gorgeous way to end an album.

But there are some songs on this album that really ROCK. "Caroline" and "Real Love", while love songs, are melodic and thoughtful, but they capture the same spirit of Sheryl Crow's "Steve McQueen". "Caroline" is the first effective attempt at electronic country I have ever heard, and it is fantastic, helped along by some incredible pedal steel playing by B.J. Cole. Although Gray stacks the songs in a rather strange order on the album, cramming the more morose songs into the middle and packing the more upbeat songs onto the two ends, this album is more than worth the wait. It is a modern rock masterpiece.

Rating: 5 out of 5 stars - A Brilliant Day At Midnight!
There have been few albums that have touched me as much as David Gray's "White Ladder" has. The first year after I purchased it, it was never far from my CD player. His lyrics are so real and his melodies so painfully sweet that I can't help but smile whenever I hear "Babylon" (I'll never get tired of that song.) or feel melancholic when "My Oh My" comes on.

So, it was with great anticipation that I awaited the arrival of David's new album. ANDAM is nothing short of a wonderful continuation to the sheer brilliance that was "White Ladder". There are so many songs that jump out at me from ANDAM! My favorites are "Be Mine" - he writes such sweet love songs - "Easy Way To Cry", "The Other Side", and Long Distance Call". Everything about David Gray is awesome: his words, his music, his voice. I love the fact that even though he may be writing about one thing, something that may have been personal to him, it somehow manages to work its way into your own life experiences. A sign of a true artist.

I'm looking forward to seeing him again in concert next year!
