Rating: - Shakira earns herself another new fan from the US!
Before I started hearing Shakira's song, "Whenever, Wherever" all over the radio, I knew nothing about her--I didn't even know she existed! But as soon as that song started playing on the radio, I knew this artist was a winner...I knew she had talent and knew she was going to make it big. Little did I know that she was already making it big...Internationally! Anyway, I continued to listen to the radio to see who that song was sung by, and then I heard the DJ say "...And that was Shakira, the popular Latin singer with her first English debut single, 'Whenever, Wherever', and the album is called LAUNDRY SERVICE." Well, that's all I needed to hear. Almost instantly, I went out and bought this CD. I listened to it right away and loved it!All of the songs on LAUNDRY SERVICE are original and upbeat, with a mix of Latin and Pop. Shakira's vocals are very strong, and she is not another Britney. Other songs I love on this CD are "Rules", "The One", "Fool", and especially her Spanish tracks. But all of the songs are really good. If you are already a Shakira fan, then LAUNDRY SERVICE is a must own. But, if you are not, then you should still buy this album because it is great! One of 2001's best albums.
Rating: - Shakira is better off singing in spanish
After hearing her amazing Donde Estan Los Ladrones? album I was thrilled to hear that Shakira was about to release her first english album, Laundry Service. Then when I heard the first single, "Whenever, Wherever", and how it had some world fusion in it, I could hardly wait to get my hands on her recent crossover offering. When I actually bought the album, however, all of my high-hopes diminished almost instantly. To me the lyrics seemed like those written by a love-sick 12 year old with uninspiring songs that became quite mediocre after about two or three run-throughs. There are, however, a few good songs on here that apparently saved me from selling this album to a used CD bin, such as "Objection (Tango)" which has a twisting dance vibe thats got a bit of latin ska to it. At first I didn't particularily care for that song but now it's growing on me. I also think that "Poem For A Horse" is a catchy song with (FINALLY!) thought-provoking lyrics. The best song though would have to be the arabian/middle eastern "Eyes Like Yours (Ojos Asi)". The spanish version is better, I think, but it's interesting to hear her sing the words in english. I personally feel that she should stick to songs like "Ojos Asi" but then she wouldn't get any airplay, now would she? That's pretty much what the music industry is coming to... Mindless pop dities. I also find it sad how spanish artists like Soraya get such little notice in the mainstream world for her crossover albums are so much better than this. Just throw some caution to the wind and consider something by her instead... Now I do credit Shakira for writing her own lyrics, despite the fact that (at the time) she wasn't too fluent in the english language, but maybe that says something... She should have waited another year! She didn't though so, while I do recommend her spanish albums, I don't recommend this. Better luck next time, Shakira...
Rating: - Once again Shakira proves she is a music genious.
With her new album "Laundry Service", colombian singer Shakira proves how talented, gifted and "full of grace" she is in any language. Smart lyrics WRITTEN BY HER and a great blend of excellent music COMPOSED BY HER, that is what Shakira Mebarak has to offer in this CD. You will find pop rock fusioned with different world rhythms like a tango in "Objection" and its spanish version "Te Aviso, Te Anuncio", andean flutes in "Whenever, Wherever" and "Suerte" and even middle eastern sounds in "Eyes Like Yours", a remake of "Ojos AsÃ", a previous hit from Shakira that can be found in the albums "¿Dónde Están Los Ladrones?" and "MTV Unplugged". In this album you will also find GREAT classic ROCK songs such as "Fool", "Rules", "Te Dejo Madrid" and "Poem To A Horse" and powerful ballads like "Underneath Your Clothes", "The One" and "Que Me Quedes Tú", where this talented young lady displays her great vocal range. And if you are a pop fan, you will find you dose in the song "Ready For The Good Times". Shakira has done it again. Laundry Service is a musical masterpiece for every music listener, this is a MUST-HAVE.
