Average Rating:
Rating: - Tuff & Gritty but still that sweet girl.
Susan Tedeschi's album (Just won't burn) cover do not do her justice. Anyone who had not heard of her would pass the album as being accidently misplaced in the Blues Section in a CD store. That sweet girl face with a stickered Telecaster leads one to think she churns out 60's type revival pop. Indeed not. Behind that sweet face is one tuff and gritty singer with a raw deceptively amaturish guitar style to match. She is not a copyist either (from her Berklee Music School training ?). She dose not try to sound like any great blues singer intentionally. Any resemblances to Bonnie Raite and Janis Joplin is most probably unintentional. I guess if you know how to wail and scream the blues, all these female singers have the same chops. She is not that earthy type of blues singer as well, like England's Maggie Bell or Koko Taylor nor that tough shuffle tempo belter like Sue Foley or Angela Strehli. Tedeschi is just unique on her own. Her songs are well structured with nice easy chord progressions and the guitar solos are not overbearing in any catagorized (Chicago, Texas or LA) style. This album is worth every cent you will pay for it. Susan will also go far in the blues audience as she has a lot to offer by not copying or imitating her peers. She remains honest like a tue blues performer ought to be.
Rating: - A very good effort
"Just Wont Burn" is a solid effort from Ms. Tedeschi. Well in my opinion there are no weak points, nothing really jumps out and makes you take notice. I'm not saying that it is a bad album, any song can be a hit, but there isnt that one megahit to blow your mind. The title track is a good down and dirty slow blues song. "Rock Me Right" gets the album off to a good rockin start that latter on, "Mama He Treats You Daughter Mean" continues. "It Hurt So Bad" is a good song that Susan gets to show off her voice. On parts of the album, she comes off sounding like Bonnie Raitt which isn't a bad thing. It is a solid enough effort, and once you listen to it, you will enjoy it. I can say that I am waiting to hear more of this artist in the future.
Rating: - Great singer, uneven recording.
I first heard this wonderful singer on the stage at the Springing the Blues festival in Jacksonville, Fla.. I have heard many female blues singers in my day and that day this little girl literally took my breath. She had an enormous stage presence as she belted out some wonderful renditions of blues classics as well as a beautiful original written by guitar player Adrienne Hayes, the song was titled Better Days and it is a very moving blues ballad. I got the chance to see her two more times at that same festival and she never failed to deliver. You had to be there and see the reaction of the crowd to really appreciate this young ladies talents. Up until recently I was the booking contact for Rafters, a small blues club in South Georgia, and I had the pleasure of booking Ms. Tedeschi. She was then playing with Sean Costello and the Jive Bombers. Susan was just getting over a cold and her voice was not up to par, yet she still managed to bring the house down on a few numbers. She was a real trooper. I agree with some of the reviews of her latest album, it is uneven and very raw, I actually like her first album better. It has more pure blues on it as well as the Better Days song. Susan recently appeared on Austin City Limits and she certainly won the approval of the audience there. She performed with the Jive Bombers sans Sean Costello. (Sean is an incredible young guitar player and singer himself). Please don't judge Susan by this one album, believe me the girl can really perform and she seems only to get better with age.I predict bigger and better things for this blues belter. If only she would stick more to the blues. That is where she really shines. Check her out when she comes to your area, you won't be disappointed.
