Rating: - Bennett still a legend at 75
Tony Bennett sounds on this album as good as he sounded twenty years ago. The slightly cracked quality in his voice remains, but he struggles less with long notes than on his most recent albums. In particular, this album is a massive leap forward from the eclectic showboating of Playin' With My Friends. It has long been a mystery to Bennett fans why Mr B did not do a full album with k.d. lang much sooner - their voices blend together so perfectly. Here, Tony Bennett is paying tribute to a man he cares about - Louis Armstrong. He is singing material that he empathises with - no modern concessions. The arrangements on the album are superb - and hint back to his best work of the 1960s. In short this is an album by an artist, who, whilst no longer at the peak of his powers, is still able to deliver a fine performance when focused on the material. He finds that focus on this splendid album.
Rating: - An Odd Couple
This is a case of an album being less than the sum of its parts. I'm a huge fan of kd Lang, and I've got a couple of Tony Bennett's CD's too. T-Bone Burnett's production and the arrangements are top notch, so the recording sounds lush and beautiful. But for me, the singers don't click. It sounds like kd is holding back something, maybe trying not to upstage Tony, and Tony's voice is obviously past its prime. Old Sachmo had a croaky voice too, but it was his trademark, not the effect of old age.
Rating: - 5 stars for KD, 4 for Tony and 2 for Producer!
The first debut cd by two of the world's most acclaimed and gifted singers, KD LANG AND TONY BENNETT, could have been much better! KD can belt it out or lower the register into a seductive whisper...she is in perfect voice as usual on this album! Tony, while not as strong a male vocalist and many others, sounds just fine in his soft style....however, every song in the album is slow. I saw these two on tour together last year and they really excel together with the fast paced rockers!!! I wish T Bone Burnett had shown more of their fun side also....better luck next time! Louis Armstrong would be proud of KD and Tony!
