Rating: - 50,000,000 RCA Record Executives Can't Be Wrong
Here's my take on the latest entry in the Elvis greatest hits compilation sweepstakes. It is without question the best single-disc collection available. And I'm sure that RCA hopes this has the same kind of sales that the Beatles 2000 release "1" had. [That probably explains the spelling of his name--ELV1S--in the title.] And so far it's working--the album is No. 1 on Billboard's charts the first week of its release. Is this this the ONLY Elvis you'll ever need? Depends. If you're a casual fan, probably. The serious fan will want it just to get the JXL radio edit remix of 1968's "A Little Less Conversation," whose late addition made it the 31st No. 1 hit of Elvis' career. [Also, do ALL copies include the 12-minute 1960 post-army interview CD that mine did?] In addition, this updates RCA's 1987 18-track "The Number One Hits" by also including his British No. 1's. Elvis' last U.S. No. 1 was 1969's "Suspicious Minds." But "The Wonder of You" (1970), "Burning Love" (1972) and "Way Down" all hit the top spot in the U.K. In fact, "Way Down" (1976) spent five weeks at No. 1. The other big surprise was 1960's "Wooden Heart," taken from the movie G.I. Blues. [The song was not released as a single in the U.S.] My only concern is that I hope it's not just old Elvis fans (like me) that are buying this disc. This is music that should transcend generations. And a quick peak at any given week's Billboard chart is evidence enough that today's artists could benefit from a little influence from the king of rock 'n' roll. HIGHLY RECOMMENDED
Rating: - Elvis Is Still the King
RCA has compiled an outstanding assortment of #1 hits from both the US and the UK. If there was ever any doubt of Elvis' universal appeal, this CD puts those to rest. Any questions of Elvis' legitimacy as the King of Rock-n-Roll are easily silenced. After one listen, any lover of music will realize how much Elvis' cultural influence and artistic brilliance have been understated over the years. The CD combines the best of his rhythm and blues, ballads, and all out rockers into one of the most entertaining and exciting collections ever released by any artist. This CD is sure to introduce Elvis to a whole new generation of fans and keep his spirit alive long into the new century and beyond. The best songs on the CD are "Hound Dog," "Hard Headed Woman," "Suspicious Minds," and "Burning Love". Also included is the 2002 worldwide hit "A Little Less Conversation" (JXL remix). Play this CD loud! Elvis deserves it.
Rating: - The King Is Back....
Elvis. One simple name that means so much. And to some music lovers, a word that means almost everything. Like it says in the CD jacket, "Before anyone did anything, Elvis did everything." This CD shows just that. Elvis has been called the King of Rock and Roll, a Gospel Guru and even a Great Balladere. This CD showcases just that. "30 #1 Hits" is a must have for any music lover. This CD commemorates the 25th anniversary of his death, and celebrates it in high fashion. 30 of his number ones are included here. Everything from rock to gospel is found here. All of his greats "Love Me Tender," "Jailhouse Rock," "All Shook Up," and "Can't Help Falling In Love," to his lesser known greats "One Night," "Way Down," "The Wonder of You," and "Wooden Heart" are here. Standouts for me include "Devil In Disguise," "Stuck On You," "Return To Sender," and "Good Luck Charm." There is even a `bonus' of sorts on the disc as well. "A Little Less Conversation," a song Elvis cut back in 1968 is remixed by JXL, dance-style, and is a wonderful listen. But the CD jacket is perhaps where the disc shines. It contains a brief history on each of the songs in the package, along with a few photos. I recommend that this CD be picked up because it will indeed please any music fan. It has the Elvis songs we all know and love, and some we probably forgot he even did. Once purchased you may find yourself singing along at times, and that is cool. Remember, Elvis is the King of R&R, and kings get all the attention. :-)
