Rating: - Silent Films Are Full of Sound
"In the long run, we've found that silent films are full of sound," Jack Johnson sings with his bluesy guitar on the opener "Inaudible Melodies." Himself a cinematographer as well as a championship surfer, Johnson's carrer move to sound proves sound. The banging drums and vocal improvisation on "Middle Man" are hallmarks of this sound. "When the prety girl walks, she walks so proud; and when she laughs, oh man, she laughs so loud," Jack sings on the bouncy "Posters." After the whimsical "Sexi Plexi" which I have yet to figure out, Jack turns in a good performance on "Flake" with its peppy beat and acoustic guitar, "It seems to me that 'maybe' pretty much always means 'no'; so don't tell me you just might let it go." My fave track is the delightful "Bubble Toes" where words pop out in a stream, "If you would only listen, you might just realize what you're missing; You're missing me!" "Fortunate Fool" is a slow tune with a 50s-style bass line, "She's the one who stumbles when she talks about the 7 foreign films that she's checked out." Soft like a lullaby, Jack croons "The News," "Who's the one to decide that it would be all right to put the music behind the news tonight?" "Drink the Water" is a midtempo track with Adam Topol's drums effectively mixed up front. The soft reggae beat of the bouncy "Mudfootball" works well. I giggle when I hear Jack's falsetto on "F-Stop Blues," "Look who's laughing now that you've wasted how many years; and you've barely even tasted anything remotely close to everything you've boasted about, look who's crying now." "Losing Hope" is a meandering little tune, "You're not the only one who's afraid of change." The piano plinks out the lumbering tune of "It's All Understood," "The Good Book is good; and that's all understood; so don't question if you know what I mean." "Brushfire Fairytales" is a lot of fun. The combination of the word "brushfire" with the CD's cover of Jack in a downpour is a great contradiction. I look forward to Jack being able to color his arrangements with a few more instruments and perhaps a bit more tempo variations on his next CD. I'd love to hear a flat-out rocker in addition to the softer tunes. All in all, this is a delightful find. Enjoy!
Rating: - Fantastic
Jack Johnson is a perfect blend of musical styles with catchy hooks, thoughtful and sometimes funny lyrics, and an unbelieveable groove. His music combines the bluesy rock of Ben Harper, songwriting of dave matthews, and the feel good surfer vibe of Sublime. With the first listen, you'll find yourself moving to the music and wrapped up in the songs. It's the type of album you'll want to share with friends. Recently, I saw him at the House of Blues in Los Angeles, and his live show does not disappoint. Please give this CD a listen, you'll be absorbed by his mellow sound.
Rating: - WoW An Icredible CD
After watching a recently released surfing video I came across this one song. It happend to be the track Mud Football on the cd Brushfire Fairytales. Although never hearing of this man before, I decided to pick it up. Expecting to hear Mud Football style songs, I was blown away by the rest of the tracks. The surfer Jack Johnson and his Layed Back Califorina Style will keep u listening for hours. This CD is a mix of Ben Harper / G. Love style, probably due to the fact all three are friends. In the song Flake, Ben Harper accompanies Jack with his famous steel guitar. His music can be ranged from an up beat track like Mud Football to a slow relaxing sound like It's All Understood. He Just had two big apperarences on the Soundtrack of "Out Cold", on Jay Leno, and On VH1's Late Night with Zack. A CD has never spent so much time in my reciever as this one. I highly suggest picking this title
