Rating: - Audioslave Rules
I was waiting forever for this cd, and although I had downloaded the demos online it was nothing like the actual cd. I was extremely pleased with how their first cd turned out. Although some Rage Against The Machine fans might miss the political lyrics by Zack De La Rocha (Rage's former lead singer), Chris Cornell more then makes up for Zack's absence. Songs such as 'Cochise', 'Set It Off', and 'Gasoline' are amazingly crafted and sounds similar to Rage Against The Machine but more improved and mature. Chris Cornell's voice and lyrics can be both soothing and piercing (in a good way). Tom Morello, as expected continues to show why he is one of the most innovative and talented guitarists in the world. And not to forget Tim Commerford who still continues his, mastering of the bass. Brad Wilk on the other hand seems a little more reserved on this album; which isn't bad at all. His presence and precision is perfect on both the hard and mellower songs. One of the most stand out tracks is 'I Am The Highway' a beautiful power ballad that you might not expect coming from the three former members of Rage Against The Machine. After listening to this cd it becomes apparent that Chris Cornell is perfect for this band and this band is perfect for Chris Cornell. This isn't Rage Against The Machine and it isn't Soundgarden; its better, more mature, and just an amazing cd. I highly recommend it.
Rating: - Rock Is Reborn
The voice of Soundgarden and the power of Rage Against The Machine combine to assault the masses with a sonic fury unlike anything you've ever seen. Audioslave's debut album is amazing. The last album that I could honestly sit and listen to from start to finish was A Perfect Circle's "Mer De Noms". Chris' window-shattering vocals send chills down your spine in standout tracks like "Cochise", "Shadow On The Sun", and "Show Me How To Live". "I Am The Highway" and "Getaway Car" are two of the slower, moodier, inward pieces on the album. "Hypnotize" has a UK club-like flavor. "Gasoline" and "Set It Off" are phenomenally powerful. Hell, I could list each song on here and write of their merits and it still could not convey just how damn good this album is. Bubblegum pop, stale rap, and corporate pop-rock need to move over. Audioslave is the future of rock. It is sonic fury. It is total bliss. If you like intelligent songwriting coupled with frenetic power behind it, and are a fan of either of the bands I mentioned above, RUN to pick this album up. This is not SG. This is not RATM. It is Audioslave. And this band and this album redefine rock. Do yourself a favor - pick up AUDIOSLAVE and turn it up to eleven.
Rating: - The best rock album in a VERY long time
Audioslave just may be the force that can save rock and bring the music scene back to the meaningful and emotionally rich state that it has not known since the early 90s grunge period. If this is the case, it would be the second time that the amazing Chris Cornell helped saved rock. After all Soundgarden predates Nirvana as a fundamental part of the grunge movement, which purged rock of the disgrace known as hairmetal. Audiosalve, however, shows potential to be greater than Soundgarden (or for that matter Rage Against the Machine) ever was. It is a merging of what is, without a doubt, the best parts of the two bands. Cornell's voice is certainly one of the best in rock history and Morello is an absolute genius whose riffwriting ability is compairable to that of Jimmy Page and whose exploration into new sounds with a guitar is remeniscent of Jimmy Hendrix. Of course the crisp, and tight rythm section cannot be overlooked. Brad Wilk and Tim Cummerford's flawless playing provide a solid backbone for Audioslave. The Album is completely satisfying from beginning to end. It is quite diverse and incredibly succesful in all the areas which it explores. Hard rock anthems like Cochise and What you Are will make you just want to get up and scream along with Cornell while Ballads like Getaway Car and I Am the Highway are sure to move you. Like a Stone and Shadow on the Sun are epic masterpieces which will have you grabbing for a lighter. Both of these two are adorned with quitar solos that are both stunning and groundbreaking. You won't soon find a better buy than this treasure so I recomend supporting the rebirth of true rock by buying one for yourself and one for a loved one right now!
