Rating: - Oh sooooo good....
I missed a chance to see Miss Krall last May in Ft. Lauderdale. This album helps me forgive myself for that faux pas. 'Live In Paris' also makes up for the overly lush, orchestrated last release, 'Look of Love', that I had to reluctantly rate as 4 stars in my review. I've wanted an album like this from Miss Krall for a long time. It was worth the wait. I'm just going to make it simple for you--buy this album, pop it in your CD player, put on headphones, light some candles, break out a bottle of French wine, turn down the lights and it is almost like you are there in the Paris audience. It is lush, but in a different way than the previously mentioned album. The lushness comes from Miss Krall's voice-not an orchestra. Her ensemble is pure magic, never overpowering the most unique phrasing that is part of Miss Krall's musical identity. For now I will settle for this album as a substitution for actually seeing her in person. Believe me, I won't let that chance pass me by again.
Rating: - The Swinging Diana Krall is Back!
This CD has what Diana Krall does best and what I really want to hear her do: get togther with a cookin' rhythmic combo and just swing through some jazz tunes. She really finds a solid groove and sits right in the pocket during almost every tune. Her piano playing gets better all the time: simple, with just the right combination of single note elegance and splendid jazz licks. Listen especially to her performances here of "Let's Fall in Love" and "East of the Sun." She doesn't play a lot of notes, but she sure plays the right ones. They are right on the money. Jimmy Rowles and Hank Jones would be pleased. "Look of Love?" Well, OK, it was a different marketing shot, but my two cents ask that she put that aside now and get back to swinging and jazz, just like we get it here. One quibble: she sings such great tunes with such classic melodies, it would nice to hear her actually sing them, rather than to play around with every one. The great jazz singers always sang a few songs straight.
Rating: - "Live in Paris" Audio CD
This live concert CD has nothing but good things to recommend it and I would say to anyone who likes standards done right as well as terrific bossa nova arrangements done by the masterful Claus Ogerman - that you can simply do no wrong in buying this audio CD. Not to mention that Diana Krall is quite an accomplished musician and her jazz piano skills really impressed me in this concert. The only thing that has me puzzled, however, is why a non-live (studio recorded) Billy Joel track was subsituted for the wonderful Nat King Cole-inspired "Love Letters" (also arranged and conducted by Ogerman). I do not see a reason for this subsitution on the audio CD. If you are driving around in your car or want to listen to good music while you are traveling, the audio CD is definitely the way to go. However, if you are home or have access to a DVD player in your location, nothing beats the DVD of this concert - where you can see as well as hear these first-rate musicians play, almost as if you were attending the concert yourself (with some considerable advantage to the DVD viewer with the excellent camera angles provided). --bj January 2003
