Average Rating: Rating: - Not focused on food Gourmet focuses more on travel, it seems, than on food itself. I find a lot of extraneous material in this magazine which is out of reach for me; it seems targeted toward a jet set that can afford to travel and stay at top hotels and eat at top restaurants. Food seems incidental. I would recommend Bon Appetit over Gourmet for any serious cook. Gourmet seems to be more about tasting other people's food and dreaming about it rather than getting serious about cooking it yourself. A lot of pictures but not a lot of substance. Definitely a coffee-table magazine. Rating: - Inspired to experiment I've always enjoyed this magazine, but I've come to be devoted to it since the new editor took over. It celebrates a wide range of cooking styles, gives helpful advice with the recipes, and takes you to other parts of the country and the world to learn about food. What really turned me on recently was an article on the art of the dumpling. The author included a number of recipes, one of which I tried--matzo balls made with the addition of ground almonds. Oh, boy, was it great. Gourmet will give you a lot of inspiration for giving meals variety and will encourage you to try new foods and new ways of preparing food. Rating: - Gourmet is GREAT! This is a very satisfying read every month. I am the kind of person who looks for a lot more than recipes from a food magazine. Gourmet, like Cook's Illustrated and Fine Cooking, makes a significant effort to ferret out some wonderful stories from the culinary world, and I appreciate that distinction. Although Gourmet gets some criticism for the complexity of the recipes--not to mention some very oddball ingredients sometimes--the point is to challenge the proficient amateur cook, and on that score they succeed admirably. I like Gourmet for a lot of reasons--and at the low subscription price, I bet you will, too!
