Rating: 2 out of 5 stars - Materialistic and snobby
I subscribed to New York magazine when I first moved to the city last year in an attempt to stay apprised of events, news, etc. Over the course of time, however, I have found that New York Magazine caters mostly to those of us who can afford things like nannies, plastic surgery and trips to Iceland. One of their worst stories was about the effects of the lagging economy on "a variety" of New Yorkers, who mostly consisted of spoiled young adults running up their credit card debts at clubs and salons and couples who are forced to buy a $1000 coffee table instead of a $3000 one. Boohoo. Almost as annoying was New York's Christmas gift guide -- flat screen TVs, a $85 goldleafed cake, a $375 bathrobe. Are they serious? Or do I just find this totally unrealistic because I'm a poor graduate student? I don't think so.

That said, I should mention some postives: The covers are pretty cool-looking. Amy Sohn's column "Naked City" is entertaining and the "Sales and Bargains" section lists all the sample sales going on around town. There are usually a few interesting articles per issue. The event listings, while not as extensive or varied as TimeOut New York, are OK considering New York's relatively low subscription price (less than half of TimeOut). In fact, the only reason I still renew my subscription is because New York Magazine is so cheap. Ironic, huh?

In conclusion, New York only has a few interesting articles, which are vastly overshadowed by the snobbishness of the rest of the magazine. The theatre, food and event listings are mediocre. However, the cheapness of the magazine almost makes up for its poor substance. Almost.

Worst of all... there aren't any horoscopes!

Rating: 5 out of 5 stars - New York Magazine Crossword Puzzles
Crossword puzzles in this magazine are written with humor, are topically current, and not as difficult as those in the N.Y. Times.

Rating: 5 out of 5 stars - Required reading for ex-pat New Yorkers
The Times and New York Magazine (especially since the New Yorker has been assimilated) are the required reading for any New Yorker.
