Rating: - What a GREAT set of Knifes!
I consider myself a chef and when I was in school learning, carving and cutting, slicing and dicing, well all I can say is these knifes fit all my at home needs from cutting steak to slicing bread and even to cutting chicken into the parts I want it to be in... They seem to be VERY strong, and they STAY sharp. Not needing to use the steel to much for sharpening. I give this set a 5+ star rating. These were a GIFT but I am looking at the price someone paid for them and for this price you are getting a really nice sturdy durable set of knifes that also look very good. Have a GREAT day.
Rating: - Good quality and Excellant value
I just received my set and I was very happy. When I ordered it I had my doubts, but decided at the price being charged how bad can it beThe knives have an excellant heavy balanced feel. The handles are secure and fit my hand well. They are more than adequately sharpened right out of the box. I cant comment on blade life but I am optimistic. If I was to critcise anything it would be the steel. It is too corse and has no finger guards. Get a good steel in its place Yes the block has one more slot than the number of knives in the set. By the way it is a 14 piece set, 13 Knives and 1 Block. you are not missing 1 knive. I would have been happy with 3 or 4 extra slots for other knives. The steak knives alone are more than worth the price of this set. It's probably better than anything you have at home unless you have spent a lot of money on imported high carbon steel knives. This is an excellant value, a good gift, an all around great deal.
Rating: - Excellent starter set of knives
I was going to purchase this as a gift for my father, but when he said he already got a new set of knives, I started thinking of myself. I've used the same old set of knives by a maker that I do not believe even exists anymore. I was a bit taken back by the inexpensive price listed here on Amazon, but I figured this was cheaper than Faberware's professional line, what did I have to lose? Absolutely nothing! My old set had edges not even 4cm wide, looking at the deep edge of these knives made me immediately notice the quality. I have rather small hands, but these knives, even the chef's knife, fit easily and comfortably in my hands. They felt well balanced in my hands and not top heavy like many brands felt in my hand (where the blade portion is much heavier than the handle, and the knife feels like its falling into your food). The razor sharp edges right out of the box were more than I'd ever want. I immediately was able to cut up potatoes, a london broil as well as a tomato with great ease! What a difference quality makes! Instead of mashing the roast in order to cut it, these knives easily cut right through the meat with no mashing, and then easily through the potato and then right through the tomato. I've never handled knives like this before. Also these knives are quite attractive with their silver logos on the ends of the knives and the all black handle (no rivets). The block looks gorgeous in my kitchen and holds the knives well. The only other thing I could ask for would be a block with the knife sharpeners inside. Maybe thats a cheap block, I dont know, but its always been a nice feature in previous blocks I've owned. Also I'd love to see a filet knife in the extra slot in the block. I guess Sabitier wants you to buy one of theirs, but Amazon isnt carrying the matching filet knife so far. Now, I'm sure for those who are familiar with using more professional grade knives, this may very well not be a good set for them. Since I am not familiar with [expensive] knives, I wouldnt know the difference. But I will say that these knives are wonderful for your home cook who's not making gourmet meals, but more meat and potatoes for their family. I'm sure that you'll agree that this is definitely the most bang for your knife buck
