Average Rating: Rating: - THE ANSWER IS BLOWING IN THE WIND: BUY IT, CLEAN UP. Backyard looking like a pig sty? Are those leaves --- you know, those red and magenta or gold and orange souvenirs from Mother Nature that you praised just a few weeks ago --- making you crazy? Don't reach for the rake. Instead, rake in the Leaf Hog. Made by Black & Decker, this high-performance product is actually three products in one. It's a blower, vacuum and mulcher --- mulching leaves and yard debris in a ratio of 10 bags of leaves into one bag. And it does so with ease: The variable speed control "power slide" adjusts blowing speeds from a light-duty 150 mph to heavy-duty hurricane-like 200 mph; the Anti-Clog Vortex Vacuum System is designed to resist clogging, allowing those annoying acorns and tiresome twigs to easily pass through the blades. The shoulder bag attachment holds up to two bushels of leaves and features a side zipper for easy emptying. And it weighs just seven pounds! Rating: - Will Not Buy Again Bought the leaf hog last season and it worked very well for both blowing and vacuuming. I liked the speed of it for vacuuming up piles of leaves. Also the mulching of the leaves saved us a lot of money in leaf bags. The only problem was noise - you must wear ear plugs for sure. Last year, due to the great performance, I would have given this unit a 4 or 5. This year after its second use the motor started smoking. On inspection I found, as others have, that the rear motor bearing had fallen out. A very poor design and a safety hazard! I see on the B&D site that some of thier cordless power drills are being recalled due to a switch causing a fire hazard - it seems to me that this problem is at least as bad. Rating: - Impressive performance, good price I'm on a 1/4 acre lot with an 80 yr old silver maple in the front yard, and an 80 yr old red maple in the back yard. I've got leaves everywhere and was tired of raking. Looked at the Leaf Hog and the Toro, and because of ergonomics, weight distribution, and ease of changing between blow and vac, I bought the hog. I also purchased the leaf collection system which directly deposits the mulched leaves into a lined trash can. Powered it up and had a blast! Used the blower to create a large central pile (15ft diameter x 2 ft high), switched over to vac, and vacuumed/chopped the pile into two industrial sized lawn/leaf bags. All this in little less than an hour. But - time will tell how well the tool holds up. I've noticed some wear on the impeller and am careful now to limit exposure to small pebbles and excessive dust. Also don't care for the extension cord retainer - it needs another turn or two to keep the cord from pulling out. All in all - I'm impressed and not sorry for the purchase. Note: bought it at Home Depot. Sorry Amazon.
