Rating: - Canon Tech Support No Good, Software No Good for XP
My primary complaint is that after buying this scanner and software and finding it doesn't work for XP, I could get no techical assistance from Canon at its web site. Not only that, the malfunctioning software at the site causes no end of frustration while wasting the customer's time. In order to send an e-mail you must enter the product number. But they do not tell you what is the product number or where to find it. I tried with many different numbers: the serial number on the bottom of the scanner, the model number in the documentation, and D125OU2 itself. Each time, the e-mail is rejected and you are back to having to retype everything. Second complaint. This model is supposed to work on XP. It doesn't. You get a warning that it will destabilize your system and that MS advises you "do not continue" with the installation. Third complaint. This model is outdated. You can't find any drivers for it at Canon. It seems to have been replaced by the D125OU2F. However, I bought the scanner without the F. How can I find out if the F software will work for it? How can I find out anything, since Canon won't accept my e-mails?
Rating: - Great scanner, can't believe the price!
I purchased three of these ....My scanners worked perfectly, no problems at all, with Windows XP Home, XP Professional, and Windows 2000. Plug-and-play. Also, canon does offer drivers for this scanner online on their website, someone just needs to do a little hunting to find them. Color reproduction is great, resolution is good, I found that I didn't need to do any color correction or editing with this scanner. It's not very fast if you don't have usb 2.0 but still decent. (with a newer usb 2.0 card or motherboard, it will scan full color pages in seconds, literally).
Rating: - A few minor issues...
In general, I found this to be an excellent scanner for the price. But I did have a few issues with it. First of all, the underside of the glass was filthy. It was fogged/marked in 4 places that I could see. Because there is no way to open the scanner (that I can see) to clean the glass myself, I will have to exchange this scanner for another. Second, the scanner does seem to need to "Adjust the Lamp" every time you do a scan, as a previous reviewer noted. I'm not sure why this is necessary. Finally, there is no on-off switch that I could see. The scanner does seem to be "on" all the time, which seems to be a common "feature" of many electronics today that I could do without. On the plus side, the scanning software does a nice job handling multi-picture scans. The time this will save me in scanning in family photos is worth the minor problems above. And I found the scan quality to be quite acceptable compared to previous scanners I've owned. I had no problems setting up the scanner under WinXP Pro.
