Rating: - Better than Satriani, Clapton, Dimeola , Santana . : GILMOUR
I think this guy is the best guitarist in this world. The sound of his guitars is incredible. It's a real pleasure : acoustic and electric , the work is perfect. If you need action and power PULSE is the best concert of all time, but if you prefer feeling and blues , this live is for you. David if you read this review, you must know that you gave pleasure to millions people around the world since your fisrt album with PINK FLOYD, thank you very much. Your modesty must be an exemple for all the artists ( and for Roger Waters for sure). I am a french man and I cried when I listened to your song of Bizet :YOU ARE THE BEST !!! The sound and video quality of this dvd is EXELLENT. My personal preference is your extra with Mica Paris : for all the professionals of electric blues , I really think that are better than all the other guitarists. I love Clapton, BB King , SRV ... but I have never heard a sound so clean and beautiful... Thanks a lot, David . I hope that you will do ohter concert like this and other dvds.
Rating: - Pink Floyd Unplugged
For Pink Floyd and David Gilmour fans out there, a note of caution: this concert has no lasers, no pyrotechnics, and no giant inflatable pigs. In fact, there's just David Gilmour, his acoustic guitar, and a few musicians. Nevertheless, the scaled down sound works for this selection of Pink Floyd songs, some covers, and a (surprisingly) few Dave Gilmour solo pieces. The additional performers - a cellist, an oboist, a small choir, and a pianist, among others - help lend a fresh feeling to the old Floyd standards, but it's the covers and solo pieces such as "Hushabye Mountain" and "Smile" that really shine. "Je Crois Entendre Encore," from a Bizet opera, and the Richard Wright song "Breakthrough" (featuring the artist himself on piano and vocals) are worth the price of the disc alone, but if you need more there are some good extras and bonus songs to add icing to the cake.
Rating: - Not As Much As I Would Expect of David Gilmour...
I was the biggest Pink Floyd Fan in the 1970s and 1980s. Admittedly, I think the Floyd dropped on my greatness scale when Roger Waters left the band (in spite of no longer having to put up with his ego). Anyway, this DVD is a mostly acoustic collection of what David Gilmour likes--not exactly what his fans would've selected for a concert DVD. After watching this one, I am even more convinced that Dave is an impressively melodic and creative electic guitarist/soloist. However, you'll see that he is pretty weak (bland) overall on his acoustic playing (sorry!). The rather eclectic group of musicians does OK, but it doesn't look like they mix well. For the Pink Floyd fan, given the choice between this DVD and Roger Waters' "In The Flesh," I would hands down go with Roger's show....it just has a better ensemble of musicians, the sound quality is far better, the video shots are far better, and the music is (dare I say) better than even Pink Floyd. So, David Gilmour is one heck of a guitarist overall, but it truly doesn't show on this DVD. So, he gets a B-minus: 3 of 5 stars. Maybe next time!
