"Spider-Man" is the best movie based on a comic book hero since 1978's "Superman - the Movie." That's not to knock the first two "Batman" flicks, but Sam Raimi's film based on the school geek turned crimefighter packs a greater punch of thrills and magic unlike anything I've seen in a while. Also, like "Superman," "Spider-Man" has a charming innocence that can make even grown adults believe in superheroes. Tobey Maguire has a reputation for bringing to life offbeat nerds, whether the films are "Wonder Boys" or "Cider House Rules." But here, Maguire hits the bullseye as Peter Parker, the brainy student who has the hots for the girl next door (Kirsten Dunst). When Parker gets accidentally bitten by a spider, his body changes and he learns of his true calling. But every hero has his nemesis, and in this film, Spider-Man's sworn enemy is the nasty Green Goblin, played to the hilt by Willem Defoe. Raimi does what many other directors fail to do: make a compelling summer movie that doesn't reek of corporate stench. The special effects are cool, but they take a backseat to the storyline and the cast which make up "Spider-Man's" greatest strengths. On its own merits, this film really earns four stars, but the loaded quality features force me to give it an extra star. However, the picture quality for a movie this recent is fairly disappointing. Many of the images look a bit pale and washed out, though the surround sound is sure to rock your system. I had long avoided "Spider-Man" because it looked less like a movie than a shameless money making machine. But it's far better than it appears. Give it a try and get yourself caught in the web.
Rating: - Hm...is this the first superhero chick flick?
And I don't mean that as an insult. Chick flicks are well known for dealing with the internals of the characters, and if there's one thing that SPIDER-MAN excels at it's giving us a look at what's going on in the hearts of everyone in the film.I've never seen a superhero film where everyone is so human, so in that way, Raimi carries on the tradition of the original comic book series--the tragedy of a young hero with feet of clay. As a long-time comic reader, I viewed this movie with some trepidation--as much confidence as I had in Raimi the director, I still had to recognize that this one was a Major Hollywood Blockbuster, with Major Hollywood Money and Major Hollywood Politics behind it. After seeing what impact those forces had on the Batman and Superman franchises, I just couldn't help worrying. I shouldn't have been the least bit concerned: Raimi, Dunst, and--most of all--Maguire deliver knock-out punches on every level. Peter Parker is so much the nerd that even the nerdy girls won't let him sit next to them on the bus, MJ Watson is the popular girl from a dysfunctional family with an ache in her heart, and everyone--even the bad guy--garners sympathy from the audience. In many ways, this is a story about pain, grief, loss, and the hope that can blossom from them. It spends as much time on the dark side of humanity as it does in the four-color world of superheroes, and even the hero's motivations aren't always noble. Everyone in this film cares for someone, and everyone pays the price for doing so. The story ends on a maginficent note that is at once tragic and hopeful, and if there's ever a movie that had me ready for a sequel, this is it. It stands as one of my "had to watch it again, immediately" landmark films. If anyone wants to know how superhero movies should be done, they should call Sam Raimi. With this film, he establishes himself as the foremost expert in the genre.
Rating: - Along came a spider!
Spider-man is great. Great visual effects, just as fast (or rather slow) as the matrix. It has it all-great characters, great plot, great special effects and of coarse great sound editing! It is almost exactly like the comics/tv cartoons! Probably one of the only differences are that... I'll let you know after you watch it (don't want to spoil it). This movie is worth watching! It's worth the wait that all Spider man fans have been waiting for. It's a film that's appealing to children, teenagers, and adults! I haven't met anyone who hates it! It has both romance and humor! Dunst and Maguire are perfect for the role! It's a movie that let's you know how wide an imagination of a director can be. It's a touching story and at the same time a fast action movie that you wouldn't mind watching over and over again! In a way it's like the comic book coming alive! It's for all Lord of the rings-Harry Potter-The matrix- and Batman fans! It's basically concentrates on Peter Parker-a guy who's in love with Mary Jane. It's a kind of movie that Alanis Morissette songs would really go with since she has songs to support all the moods that you'd feel as you watch Spider-Man (and hey she has a song called Mary Jane!). Overall it was really worth the wait. It's better than any movie I've watched all summer! The movie packs together a lot of excitement. Just like Lord of the rings it's touching and at the same time exciting (I know I've mentioned this before!). No one could have made it any better than Raimi (although I'd like to watch a movie directed by Peter Jackson and Raimi). Spider-man is no old super hero movie (although it does have a damsel who is constantly in distress)-it's a modernized fast creation that could only be imagined as you read the comic books-until now! It's a spectacular flick that you should watch if you haven't watched it yet! It's a movie that very rarely bores you. It doesn't stretch a scene by giving you too much detail. It's really worth watching on the big screen! -------------------------AHMED MASHHOOD--------------------------
