Bottom line: The Simpsons is the funniest, smartest show on television. This is satire at its best! It has a strong cast of characters which is one of the reasons it has survived for so many years. This DVD is a fan's dream, and is loaded with clips, commentary, and of course the groundbreaking first season of shows. A landmark show finally has a fitting DVD set. The early episodes of course aren't quite as sharp in the animation department, as the art and produciton values will continue to grow with each season. The writing is there, however, and its fun seeing how the characters have evolved/grown over time. And hey, these are the classic episodes! I look forward to the release of the rest of the seasons, but for now will enjoy this wonderful set. If you are a fan (and you probably are since you're reading this) this is a must have. This is the kind of set you go buy a DVD player for!

They finally got their act together and released The Simpsons on DVD. So here is my review for season one of the best cartoon series ever.Anyone who follows the adventures of America's leading dysfunctional family will be happier than Barney Gumble with a case of Duff Extra Cold after checking out this three-DVD set. Like the title says, this collects all 13 episodes from the first season of The Simpsons, and if some of the material isn't up to the standards the show would set a few years later, every episode is clever, funny, and closer to the truth of the average American family than most more "realistic" television series. And the presentation is everything a fan could hope for; the full-frame mastering is sharp and clear, and each episode includes witty and revealing commentary tracks from creator Matt Groening and a revolving panel of the show's writers, directors, and producers. The audio has been remixed for both Dolby Digital 5.1 and Dolby Digital Surround, and there are also alternate French-language tracks in Dolby Digital Surround. And there's a bevy of bonus material, including the original scripts for four episodes ("Bart the Genius," "Bart the General," "Moaning Lisa," and "Some Enchanted Evening"), outtakes of Albert Brooks ad-libbing his way through the recording of his dialogue for "Life in the Fast Lane," several minutes of disastrous rejected footage from the animators' first try at "Some Enchanted Evening," original character sketches for the show, early Simpsons shorts from The Tracy Ullman Show, a British television documentary about the phenomenon of The Simpsons, and even a few Easter Eggs (hint: try clicking on the T-Shirt!). Without question, this is the best presentation of The Simpsons on home video to date, and one can only hope the DVD sets of the show's subsequent seasons will live up to this high standard. DVD Features include Disc 1:Commentaries on each episode, Bart the Genius: Original Script, Bart the General: Original Script, Moaning Lisa: Original Script, Disc 2:Commentaries on each episode, Disc 3:Some Enchanted: Original Script, Unaired Episode with Optional Commentary, Animatic: Bart the General w/Commentary, Albert Brooks, Outtakes, America's First Family BBC Special, Bart T-shirt Controversy ABC News, Tracy Ulman: Good Night Simpsons, Foreign Language Clips (7), Early Sketches (Still Gallery-100), and 12 stills and magazine covers.
