Rating: - Selleck Continues as the Modern John Wayne
Tom Selleck is one of two current western actors who continue the realism of the "old west" western actors in the mold of John Wayne and others. Westerns in todays age are an "acquired taste". Selleck is a natural and in this tale he continues his best efforts as he did in the Sacketts, Quigley Down Under, and the other great Westerns he's excelled in. The story has a character of realism like all the Louis Lamour classics and Selleck portrays the hero in respect to the writers intent to picture the real Old West. Virginia Madsen is an unusual selection for the heroine, but she carries off the role and doesn't detract from the plot. Wilford Brimley again demonstrates his dynamic talents as a great character actor - an unusual role for him but he adds credibility to the plot. And Mark Harmon gives honest credibility to the villian's role of all great westerns. For the Westerns movie buff, another Selleck success is a great addition to one's collection.
Rating: - Louis L'Amour & Tom Selleck Are A Great Team..
Take a great storyteller like Louis L'Amour, cast either Tom Selleck or Sam Elliot in the lead role and you have all of the ingredients for an entertaining western.Having seen and enjoyed the Sacketts and the Shadow Riders many years ago, a new Louis L'Amour - Tom Selleck movie was long overdue. But the wait was well worth it. This is a terrific movie with some majestic scenery . Also, Wilfred Brimley is wonderful (as usual) as a crusty but lovable curmudgeon who befriends the hero. And surprisingly, Tom Harmon is thoroughly dislikable as the villian who's trying to get the widow's land/ranch. As far as I'm concerned, they could make a movie of every LL book and cast Tom Selleck as the protaganist and I would be a very happy camper.
Rating: - Great Old Fashioned Western!!!
I am very excited about this coming out on DVD. The scenerey is fantastic. Based on a Louis L'Amour book, the cast does a great job of bringing this book to life. Tom Selleck is a perfect L'Amour character and Mark Harmon a perfect bad guy. Just a great old fashioned western that the whole family can enjoy. Some violence, but not excessive. A 5 star movie!
