Rating: - Who Are You?
I wish this book was required for life like air is for
breathing. The Seven Habits (which has sold close to one
gajillion copies, at last count) have become so immensely
popular for one very good reason--they work. The more you
think about Covey's words, the more the truth of them sinks
in. Covey starts by asking his readers to invest in character
rather than personality, then takes the reader on a wholistic
journey to find out what's really important to him/her. No,
there's no metaphysical sojourn and we never see Shirley
MacLaine, but Covey does ask the reader to ask some serious
questions. With those answers, he helps you build a life
focused on the values you have chosen and guided by the
principles that lead us all. Career management, time control,
priorities, family, career, leisure, friends--it's all in
here. The Seven Habits are all about becoming the best
person you can be, starting first with independence, then
working toward interdependence.
Covey may not be the most interesting writer in the world,
but the message he brings is far too important to miss. If you're
not afraid to find out about yourself and have the courage
to change yourself into the best person you can be, do yourself
an incredible favor and read this book.
Rating: - Stephen Covey's 7 Habits an Old Friend Even After 10 Years
There is no question that Stephen Covey's book, THE 7 HABITS OF HIGHLY EFFECTIVE PEOPLE:POWERFUL LESSONS IN PERSONAL CHANGE, has been one of the more important books about how to personally achieve excellence--millions of copies have been sold. His ability to collect the wisdom of the ages and then organize and articulate it in a way that makes sense to those of us who are less skilled is truly inspiring. I read the book when it first came out ten years ago and have frequently revisited it over the years. It has been an "old friend" providing a context for my understanding a variety of "paradigm shifts" in both my professional and personal life. It has also been used, and is still used, in my company as a leadership development tool. I recently re-read it and can again highly recommend it. If you like this book, you might also like to read another fairly recent book that I have found to be very powerful. The title of the book is WORKING ON YOURSELF DOESN'T WORK by Ariel and Shya Kane. Whereas Mr. Covey seems to focus on incremental, personal change and working on the development of new "habits"-a "change model"-the Kanes focus on "awareness" (in an anthropological sense) of "what is"--of "one's own behaviors" and of the "behaviors of others"--as a vehicle for personal transformation, greater achievment and personal satisfaction--a "transformation model" vs a "change model". Interesting contrast in approach--I think you'll like it.
Rating: - This book has improved my life!
I, like almost every human being in the world, have a hard time prioritizing and improving my weakest points. I have also been given advice on how to juggle school, work and a personal life without feeling as though I'm about to explode. But as that old cliche goes, it's easier said than done. Having read The Seven Habits of Highly Effective People, however, my personal problems have somehow subsided. This is definitely a book that could change your life. That is if you follow what it says. It teaches you how to be proactive and how to take time to do the things that one might take for granted, like your physical and mental health and social and spiritual life. Also, it helps you figure out if you have a win/win mentality. This is a great and extremely helpful book. It is -- without a doubt -- the best self-help book I have purchased in years. I applaud Stephen R. Covey for having written such an honest and informative book. I strongly urge to read it. And I also strongly urge you to reflect on it and follow the instructions on how to be a better and more proactive person.
