Rating: 3 out of 5 stars - (3.5) A "Ladies" Guide to Victorian England
I almost decided not to review this first novel by Sarah Waters, as I was quite speechless after finishing it. But having enjoyed AFFINITY, her second novel, I know that Waters is a uniquely talented writer. TIPPING THE VELVET leaves nothing to the imagination, so it's quite a crash course for the uniniated, but certainly worth the effort.

In the early 1960's, Harold Robbin's potboiler, THE CARPETBAGGERS, was a source of sexual information, and then some. In much the same way, Waters is fearless as she wades through the lesbian adventures of Victorian England. Nan King propels the reader through an emotional rollercoaster as she embarks upon a career as a music hall entertainer in drag, as well as behind the closed doors of the mansions of wealth and privilege (read: privacy), all with the intensity of new romance and broken hearts. What can I say? I was blushing through most of the book...and I did pass it on to other friends of whatever sexual orientation.

Rating: 5 out of 5 stars - Kudos to Sarah Waters
This is a excellent book. I couldn't put it down, and when I did have to, I couldn't wait to get back to it. It is an excellent view into Victorian England with great attention to detail. I felt such sympathy for Nancy Astley. Your heart will soar and break with hers. In the few days it took me to read this novel, nothing in my world seemed to matter but Nan. It is so touching, compelling and wonderfully erotic. I only hope there will be a sequel (hopefully you read this, Ms. Waters). Do yourself a favor and buy this book. Enjoy.

Rating: 5 out of 5 stars - A tip of the hat to Tipping the Velvet
I bought this book almost a year ago when it first came out and then never had a chance to read it until recently. How I am sorry that I waited so long to do so. An incredible romp through the cities of England and the streets of London. Sarah Waters has a true gift for bringing characters to life. I found myself wanting to join Nancy on her journey. There are so many twists and turns that you are often left wondering "how is Waters going to get Nance out of this one?" And just as you think there is no hope and that our heroine will surely be lost forever, Waters pulls out all the stops and twists us around yet again into a loop that makes complete sense and leaves us wanting more.

The moment I finished reading Tipping the Velvet, I wanted to start all over again.
