Rating: - A Classic. Independent Free-Thinking Mind Required.
There is not much that one can say that hasn't already been said. This book has stood the test of time; other know-it-all one-size-fits-all infant care books have not.One observation that I have made is that you will not find this book promoted by popular baby stores such as "Babies R Us". Having visited many branches of such stores, I have never seen this book promoted in the book section. It dawned on me why. Dr. Sears' approach is decisively anti-consumerist. He strongly recommends breast feeding - nothing to buy here. He strongly recommends co-sleeping - no crib or sheets to buy. He recommends the use of a baby sling or baby carrier - OK, you can find such items at "Babies R Us", but this is meant as a replacement for a much more expensive stroller. Bottom line: following the recommendations in this book means going against the grain set by product-dispensing corporations that are the center of a society centered around consumption. Read this book and think long and hard about what you believe and what you value in the role of a parent, and tune out all the noise around you including well-meaning family members.
Rating: - Sears are truthful
Dr. Sears and his wife are always so truthful and helpful. We get many examples out of each book written as great wisdom is shared. Many parents may not agree with the time consuming suggestions. We often are way too busy to go through the parenting plan that's best for our children and want the fastest and easiest way out. Just try to do it first as the Sears suggest and then make the comments. The book is very much like Your Baby and Child by Penelope Leach. Many of the same thought patterns are explained and charted. Children are what we make them. If we don't take the time to encourage self love and kindness, they will feel bad about themselves as well as the world. I have seen this over and over in families that are so busy, they don't take the time for their infants and toddlers. I'm extrememly happy Dr. Sears says quite a bit about the fathers in the household and the important role they play. This is also very clear in a book I used and am still using for my children and myself, Mommy-CEO, Revised Edition, by Jodie Lynn. Lynn and Sears say children must come first, take out time for yourself, but be very strong in building a family life together with your husband. There are very few other books who promote this type of family ties and suggest that to keep your family together as a team will ensure a highly successful endeavor for everyone. Both authors also comment on how putting yourself in the place of other members in the household can benefit each individual, including babies through teens. Jodie Lynn doesn't offer a lot for infants, but for toddlers through teens, it's a handy simple to read book with tons of things I wished I'd read when my first baby was still small. Both books prepare you for the toddler years by keeping the focus on the young child. All together, the three authors highlight major road blocks that can and will happen. They help parents to see that when it's all said and done, a truly happy and healthy family is one where time and patience is of true virtue for a successful life with kids.
Rating: - Happy Baby, Happy Parents
Dr. and Mrs. Sears' have raised 8 children of their own, including one high needs, one with Down Syndrome, and one adopted. They've tried both mainstream and attachment parenting styles. This book is the culmination of their many years of practical and professional experience - he is a pediatrician, she is a nurse and childbirth educator. Their basic philosophy can be summed up as: knowing your baby, meeting your baby's needs, and trusting your instincts.
We have met a lot of families with babies since having our own daughter 8 months ago, and we can truly see a difference between the attachment parented ones and the rest. Not only is there a different quality to the attachment parented babies - some extra spark of life - the parents also are happier. Instead of constantly fighting and struggling against their children, attachment parenting leads to a harmonious household full of trust, love and mutual support.
Other good books to look for are the Sears' The Pregnancy Book, The Birth Book, Nighttime Parenting, and The Discipline Book. Also Tine Thevenin's The Family Bed and Barbara Coloroso's Kids Are Worth It!
Bill and Martha Sears may challenge many of mainstream society's beliefs, but if you read this book with an open mind, you too can learn something valuable. Try it. Your baby will thank you
