Rating:  - The best bottle system around!
In my opinion the Avent bottle system is superior to any other product on the market. The disposable system works great for storing and freezing milk and is convenient for Mom's on the go. My only mistake was not buying enough bottles in the beginning when my son ate eight times a day. The bottles are designed to reduce gas, and seem to do the job, additionally the wide neck allows for less mess when filling the bottles. Avent offers a spill-proof top with valve system that adapts to the 4oz or 9oz bottles. The spill-proof top allows liquids through the cap only when your child is sipping. By purchasing the spill-proof tops with handles, it eliminates the need for sippy cups. The one slight annoyance with the system, you have to place the ring on the lids directly on top of the nipples; otherwise, the bottle has a tendency to leak. F.Y.I. - I purchased the adjustable flow nipples when my son turned three months old as recommended, but nowhere in the product information does it tell you that you are supposed to line-up the Roman numerals of the nipples directly in line with your baby's nose to adjust the flow. This makes sense of course, but I had to call the 1-800 number to discover that "little" detail.
Rating:  - Good bottles for breastfeeders
Our plan was to breastfeed our daughter exclusively. Unfortunately when she became ill at 3 weeks we were forced to give her bottles for a week. We were given some enfamil nipples in the hospital which caused so much nipple confusion that she almost lost the ability to breastfeed altogether. Over the next several weeks we tried almost every nipple on the market that claimed to mimic the breast (playtex, nuk, among others) only to encounter more problems. The avent bottles worked for us at least to keep her bottle feeding in a way that forced to make some effort to get her food (as does breastfeeding). Once we were able to reestablish breastfeeding, and felt that it was going well, we reintroduced the bottles. The Avent bottles seemed to work the best in terms of mimicking the breast. We liked Nuk also but the nipples tended to collapse when she sucked making her frustrated, and making it very difficult to feed her. Many of the other reviews mention the bottles leaking. We haven't found that to be a problem. Also, I think it is important to keep in mind that when your baby is primarily breastfed, there is no nipple in the world that will totally recreate that experience. Our baby does dribble out the sides a little when she drinks but we think that has more to do with the slight difference in shape that the Avent bottle has as opposed to my breast. Since the ultimate goal is to keep her breastfeeding (bottles are only for daycare and occassional use when Mommy can't be around), then we really don't mind that she dribbles a bit. Also, one thing to keep in mind is make sure you are using the right flow nipple for your baby. All Avent bottles come with newborn flow nipples but there are many different flows and they all look the same. I have accidently bought the wrong nipple on more than one occasion. If the nipple you use is too high flow, your baby will certainly dribble or even choke on the milk. Another problem I have noticed with my new-mom-friends is that every woman's breast and nipple are shaped differently and it might make sense to look for a nipple that is more similar to your breast shape as opposed to what is popular. I think that is why the Avent has worked so well for our daughter. Overall this has been a great product. Our baby has shown no nipple confusion at all since we reintroduced the bottles, and is eager to breastfeed whenever Mommy is around.
Rating: - Indispensable for supplementing breastfeeding
I used this newborn starter set for my first baby a few years ago(He was breastfed, but I pumped regularly and supplemented with formula for nighttime feedings). These nipples are designed to mimic the shape and action of the real thing, so your baby can switch back and forth more easily and not fall into that trap of preferring the bottle out of laziness. Also, my child swallowed very little air. The two four-ounce bottles and two 8 oz bottles in this set were nearly all that I needed to get me through two years of use. This system is not perfect, albeit the best thing available on the market for breastfeeders. The plastic did get scratched after several months of use and handcleanings -- probably no more so than any other brand. You will also need to buy a few extra nipples. On the whole I think Avent makes a very high-quality product that is great for 100 percent bottle feeders as well as supplementing.
